Musical Interludes: The Dog Days are Over

I love this song, especially lately, because it is starting to feel like my own life, finally.

I gave up on life for about 10 to 12 years. To me, the song speaks of losing a beloved husband and not wanting to be here anymore. Spending a couple of years missing him so horribly that you want to die and think about it daily. You plan it out as an accident so that the kids will still be able to collect the insurance. You make sure everyone knows where the kids are to go afterward, what you want for their future. For a few more years, you merely hurt so badly that you can barely breathe. A few more and it gradually turns to just hurting intensely every few days. Suddenly, one day you wake up and realize that it has been a dozen years gone and you have spent almost a full week without mentioning him to someone you meet, telling your sons they remind you of him, waking up from a dream with him in it.

The last four years happiness really has started to sneak up on me and sometimes hits like “a train” at times and then disappears down the track. At first, I resented it, but these last two years I have started really fighting to push the resentment down. I am fighting to allow happiness back in. I am running fast toward it starting this year, finally. Running for my mother, sisters, brothers and especially my children. This November will be our 20th anniversary and next January will be the 16th anniversary of his death. It is time for the Dog Days to be over, once and for all.

Dog Days Are Over – Florence and The Machine

Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with her drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You can’t carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
‘Cause here they come

And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh
Happiness hit her
like a bullet in the back
Struck from a great height
by someone who should know better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
‘Cause here they come

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You can’t carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
‘Cause here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run
